CATS Network Guide

Welcome. This is meant to serve as a central repository for information on the CATS network and systems. Other places to look for information include RPInfo and the DotCIO Helpdesk.

If you have any ideas for ways to improve this, you can Register in the wiki and make changes yourself, or you can also email with your suggestions.

Getting Help

There are several ways to get computer support, based on the urgency of the problem:

Low and Medium priority: Talk to Jeanette Young and/or Heidi Merrill and have them put in a request.

High priority: See Heidi Merrill in CII 8015. She will page the systems administrator. Examples of high priority problems are problems that directly interfere with meeting a deadline, or any critical network or server outage. For instance: the inability to access the Internet from your workstation is not critical. Accessing the fileserver from multiple workstations is a High priority.

Acceptable Use Policy

By receiving your RCS account, you've agreed to follow the Rensselaer Policy on Electronic Citizenship.

Network Resources

Through CATS you have access to the VPR file server. You have a directory containing your network profile (used if you log into any machines on the RPI Windows domain), and access to project space.

These are accessible from anywhere on the RPI network by connecting to:

  • \\\VPR for access to the CATS projects folder and software installers
  • \\\UserHomes$\[RCS username] for access to your personal folder. (Replace [RCS username] with your RCS username).
For help connecting these network folders and having them show up as local system drives, please see: NetworkDrives.

Please see the Helpdesk for instructions on setting up your RCS account. You can also use the web interface at . If you are new to campus, you need to stop by the Helpdesk in the VCC to get your RCS account setup.

You account will need to be setup to print to the CATS common printers. Heidi Merrill will need to put in a request for this. After your account is setup (you'll receive an email telling you this has happened), you can use the directions at CII8023ABPCL6 to configure your machine.

VPN Access (Wireless and Off-campus)

Please see: Helpdesk: Campus VPN Service

Working remotely

WorkingFromHome has directions to setup your personal machines to connect to the RPI network, and access your email and files.
